It has been 4 years since i'm in Hyderabad. Its my 4th Ramadan time in Hyderabad. Hyderabad is know for its two delectables, Biriyani and Haleem. Haleem is a special delicacy which will be available only during Ramadan times. Since the time i am living in hyderabad, i keep hearing about the taste of the haleem which i havent tasted. The reason being, i am vegetarian. Haleem is generally made of meat and ghee. So i havent tasted it. But i always had in mind, why is the dish so famous? How does it taste sweet, sour, hot???
I remember my colleagues shankar, sharon and kiran used to have haleem during ramdan times at Paradise(Sec'bad) which is very close to my previous office, Effigent. They used to have it in the evening during snacks time. I dont accompany them always as i couldn't eat it and just seeing them eat haleem doesnt make me happy :).
I always thought if there had been Veg Haleem which sounds funny for me then but not now. It may sound funny now even to some one who doesn't know that there is Veg Haleem available in Hyderbad. My search for veg haleem started in 2006 ramadan times. I havent enquired with the restaurants. But if anyone talks about haleem i used to certainly ask if they know something of Veg Haleem which i even was not sure of. The response was a simple n sarcastic smile.
Finally, on the way from cyber towers to Lakadikapul via Mehdipatnam, this year i found an outlet of PISTA HOUSE which serves Haleem. The traffic used to be very slow by the time we reach the road passing afront of pistahouse. The reason was Haleem. Its always crowded, everyday and everytime i see. This time i didn't want to take a chance. As its being friday, i thought of stopping there and ask the restaurant wala about Veg. Haleem.
When i asked for Veg Haleem at the counter, i remember all the people around there stopped with what they were doing and looked at me for a moment. I donno why, it was quite embarassing. The counter wala was also not sure about if they had veg haleem. So he asked me to enquire at the kitchen window and showed me the way. I came back to him saying that they do have Veg haleem. It costed me Rs.60/-. I collected the parcel amidst of the heavy crowd(i debt the crowd would be as huge as the crowd waiting for tickets for chiranjeevi's cinema for the first day, first show :)) and came back on my way to my place.
I reached the room and was very eager to taste(which i was thinking even while driving home :)) it. I opened it with lot of interest. But as soon as i opened the pack and see it, i was not sure if it was veg or non-veg as the look and feel i.e. UI:) passes the wrong message. So i asked my roommate(rupesh, who is a non vegetarian by habit) to taste it and see if its certainly not non-veg. The complete upper part of the pack was covered with Ghee and i can get by its smell. After proper approval and reconfirmation only i tasted it. It was not upto my expectations as i had been waiting for this right moment since 4 years and my expectations were very high about the famous dish.
So, Dear Vegetarians!! Gud times now for you too...-:) you too can taste Haleem now. Go ahead and enjoy -:).
